31 Jan Ricky Jessen – January 2021 Station of the Month
Our January Station of Month belongs to Ricky Jessen (KG5FDT). Ricky primarily focuses on the HF bands and is currently focused on FT8. He uses a Yaesu FT991a which is an all-mode radio allowing him to do both HF and 2m/70cm all with one radio. With this set up Ricky uses an MFJ G5RV Jr. center-fed dipole that allows him to transmit and receive on 20m, 40m, and 80m. So far, Ricky has over 1100 contacts in 35 countries; he often works Australia, Japan, Spain, and Russia, as well as stations all across the US.
Ricky also has a few 2m/70cm only radios including a mobile Kenwood 710g, a mobile Kenwood 281, which was his first radio, and a few Baofeng HTs. On local bands, Ricky is active with ARES Skywarn nets, which he operates from his decked-out radio room which comes complete with TV, independent AC/heat, a futon, and an assortment of bird watching opportunities which he sometimes shares with his wife while he is operating.
Although Ricky has just recently started with FT8, he is very interested in using this mode for contesting going forward. He is also looking to install a new 2m antenna which he won at the club’s 2020 Christmas Party, in order to replace his old one that got hit by a lightning strike.
