Our October Station of the Month belongs to James Frank (KW5CW) and is outfitted with a Kenwood TS590SG for low bands and an all mode ICOM IC-7100 as well as an Anytone AT868UV and Kenwood TH-K20 handy talkies. In addition to these, James also keeps his vintage transceivers, a Drake TR7 s/n 678 along with a MN7 s/n 529 which was one of the first completely solid state transceivers on the market in the 70s, as well as a Heathkit HW-16 tube transceiver and VFO that he built when he was just 14 years old.
While James is a CW guru and has admittedly operated CW on land, in the air, and while floating the river in a WV bug, he also enjoys numerous other modes of operation including FT8 and DSTAR. He is active in contests, such as the 13 colonies event, and has recently begun operating POTA events, starting with his first ever POTA activation at the club’s Eisenhower Birthday event earlier this month. James enjoys building antennas and is looking into satellite communications as well. James is always eager to help others learn about CW and Ham Radio in general and can often be found helping others with their stations, working on our club website, and producing our wonderful monthly newsletter.
