Our September Station of the Month belongs to Leland (Lee) Sly (N5SLY) and is outfitted with a Yaesu 1900 for local bands and an ICOM 7300 for HF. Lee also still has his first radio, a Yaesu FT 60 which is a dual band 2M/70cm handy talky. Lee uses the 7300 with a 5 element beam for 10, 15, 20, and 30 meters and a G5RV wire antenna that works on 6, 10, and 80 meters. He would like to eventually set up a 160 meters, but has not gotten to it yet due to the length of wire required.
Lee enjoys the HF bands most and uses both voice and digital modes. On digital, he uses FT8 as most people are currently using it; however, he’s also somewhat of an expert on PSK. Lee states that he likes PSK because, “although it’s slower, you can have a rag chew on it.” Lee has spent as much as an hour using PSK to communicate with a single contact using his keyboard to type out his messages. Lee is a member of the PODXS 070 club which conducts monthly PSK contests that have shorter spans (around 6 hours) which he really enjoys. He’s also active with Parks on the Air (POTA) and enjoys taking his 7300 mobile with an Eagle-1 antenna which he operates from his vehicle.
