Our June Station of the month is a mobile station owned by Bill Pierce (K5XBP) outfitted with a Yaesu 891 HF, all band radio as well as a Kenwood 710G, with vhf, uhf, APRS and Winlink data. Bill does a lot of his ham radio work from his mobile units. This is partly because he is limited in his home antenna setup, but also because many of the actives he enjoys most, such as the bike rallies and storm watching, lend themselves well to having a mobile station and being able to operate on the move or with an external antenna connection similar to his field day setup. Bill, who has been a ham since 2015, says that the hobby gives him “something to do with [his] retirement” and allows him to stay home with his wife. Although Bill and his wife have traveled extensively in the past, now he finds that he would like to experiment more with antennas and see how far he can travel with the radio from home.
A big thank you to Bill (K5XBP) for sharing his station with us!
